Job Title: Accountant, Budgeting and Reporting
Organization: Watoto Church Ministries
Duty Station: Watoto Church Downtown, Kampala

 

We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Accountant – Budgeting and Reporting to join our team. This role will ensure accurate, timely financial reporting and budgeting to support the continued success of Watoto Church Ministries.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Financial Analysis & Reporting:

  • Prepare timely, accurate financial statements and management reports in line with Watoto’s Finance Policy.
  • Prepare monthly variance analysis reports to compare actual vs. budgeted figures and prior year figures, explaining variances to relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain and ensure balance sheet reconciliations and listings are up to date.
  • Act as the primary liaison for external audits, ensuring compliance and addressing audit queries.
  • Implement audit recommendations and follow up on resolutions.

2. Budgeting & Forecasting:

  • Lead the Annual Ministries budget coordination in collaboration with other team leaders.
  • Ensure budgetary controls are in place, monitoring that expenditure remains within approved limits.
  • Track departmental budgets and conduct quarterly realignments according to financial policy.
  • Prepare quarterly financial forecasts and provide cost control insights to management.

3. Process Controls and Execution:

  • Manage the Accountable Advance process, ensuring compliance with controls.
  • Review and ensure accurate allocation of shared costs for all entities.
  • Monitor and ensure regular reconciliations of programs and settlements.

4. Risk Management & Compliance:

  • Serve as the key liaison with tax professionals and ensure the computation of corporation tax and deferred tax for all business entities.
  • Prepare financial disclosures related to taxation and file corporate tax returns.
  • Handle correspondence with statutory bodies and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Manage retirement and other benefit plan reporting.

5. Policies and Procedures:

  • Contribute to the review of Watoto Ministries’ financial policies to ensure alignment with international standards and the ministry’s needs.
  • Assist in the development of finance risk mitigation strategies.

6. Projects and Systems Development:

  • Develop and manage automated financial systems to improve reporting accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ensure that all information retrieved from accounting systems is complete and accurate.
  • Handle special projects and ad hoc analyses as required.
  • Provide technical oversight to improve the accounting systems and processes.

7. Human Resource Management and Development:

  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and performance appraisals of finance team members.
  • Ensure that all staff have clear job descriptions and performance action plans.
  • Lead employee initiatives to foster high performance and implement the department’s annual leave schedule.

8. Report Preparation:

  • Analyze data and prepare data-driven reports for strategic decision-making.
  • Prepare periodic and ad hoc reports for management and the Deacons Finance Committee.
  • Organize Deacons Finance Committee meetings as needed.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field from a reputable university.
  • Completed or in the process of obtaining professional certification in accounting (e.g., ACCA, CPA, or similar).
  • At least 5 years of experience in a busy finance and accounts function.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems; experience with Solomon is a distinct advantage.
  • Strong financial analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail skills.
  • Solid understanding of financial principles, cash management, and risk analysis.
  • Strong report writing, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality and make sound judgments.
  • A high level of personal and professional integrity.
  • Ability to live up to organizational values and a strong work ethic.
