Agricultural Field Officer

Justice Livelihoods Health (JLH), a national NGO, working in multiple locations across Uganda, has secured funding for an Agribusiness Livelihoods Project that will train 100 households in improved farming methods and agribusiness in Omoro, Nwoya and Gulu Districts of Uganda.
The Agricultural Field Officer will be responsible for delivering training and supporting fieldwork activities that will transform households from subsistence-living to developing their own agribusinesses in those districts.
We are therefore looking for a dedicated worker, who is motivated by their faith, to take on this challenging and rewarding role. The Agricultural Field Officer will be based in Gulu, with extensive rural travel across Gulu and neighbouring districts.
Main responsibilities:
- Deliver a comprehensive agricultural and business training programme to all the farming groups formed under ALP project and other projects.
- To be a strong Christian role model to beneficiaries, including delivery of Bible studies and discipleship of farmers.
- Coordination of farming and training activities and mobilisation of farming groups.
- Oversee fieldwork of all the participating households, ensuring that farmers put their training into practice.
- Support the coordination of harvesting and marketing of farmers’ produce.
- Work closely with the project management team, providing regular updates on activities and monthly progress and finance reports.
- Contribute to the on-going improvement of project delivery and the development of new project ideas.
- Plan and take lead in the M and E activities and project reporting
- Supporting other agricultural related activities within the programme
Personal specification:
To be considered for the post, applicants should meet the following essential criteria:
- A born-again Christian whose life reflects their professed belief and whose faith they are willing and able to share with others.
- A person of the highest integrity who is honest, humble and willing to learn.
- A person who is dedicated and reliable, and can be trusted to complete a task.
- Qualified to at least diploma level in agriculture, agronomy, or a related subject.
- At least 2 years’ experience in providing agricultural training, or similar work.
- Fluent in both Luo and English.
- High standard of written English.
- High standard of mathematics.
- Computer literate: confident in communicating by email, and a competent user of Microsoft Office programmes.
- Able and qualified to ride a motorcycle and willing to travel to remote rural locations
The successful candidate is expected to meet the following
Desirable criteria:
- Experience of integrating Christian discipleship into agricultural training.
- Experience of cross-cultural working relationships.
- Familiar with working with rural farming groups.
- Practised in networking with other NGOs, local government and other organisations.
- Experience of farming as a business.
