Agronomist, M&E Officer & Driver
Part-time
IFPRI – HarvestPlus Uganda with funding from Latter-Day Saints (LDS), seeks to scale biofortified crops in refugee settlements in Rwamwanja, Kyangwale, Kiryandongo and Lamwo as a food-based approach to address food and nutrition insecurity and micronutrient malnutrition. This will involve working with NGO partners in refugee settlements to increase the production, consumption, and marketing biofortified crops. To accomplish these activities, HarvestPlus is seeking consultants on a part time basis to support implementation of these project activities in the project area.
1. Agronomist:
Duties
- Train and follow up seed/vine producers and support establishment of multiplication gardens for OSP and HIB
- Support promotion and marketing of seed and ensure data collection on quantities marketed.
- Develop training package and strengthen capacity of field extension workers in agronomy for the 3 different biofortified crops in order to increase yield, area under production for the crops; and productivity of biofortified crops.
- Monitor field performance and support uptake of recommended management practices.
- Work closely with marketing team to ensure staggered production to ensure continuous supply of biofortified crops on the market.
- Participate in regular planning and review meetings to enable participatory monitoring evaluation and learning of partners to improve performance.
- Participate in report writing.
Qualifications and Experience
- A degree in agriculture with 5+ years relevant experience in agricultural extension
- Knowledge and experience in seed systems for both seed and vegetatively propagated crops
- Collaborative, self-motivated and able to work well within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Very good oral and written English communication skills; fluency in some local languages.
- Very good interpersonal and organizational skills
- Willingness to undertake regular travel.
- Familiarity with research and scientific data collection methods
- Experience in working with/contacts in the NGO community.
- Knowledge of pro-poor strategies; gender-sensitive approaches
2. Monitoring and Evaluation Officer
Duties
- Develop data collection tools for the various indicators.
- Train partner staff and support partners to ensure collection of relevant and appropriate data.
- Collate the data collected by various partners and enter it in the HarvestPlus database.
- Participate in regular planning and review meetings to enable participatory monitoring evaluation and learning of partners to improve performance.
- Participate in report writing
- Participate actively in program planning process to ensure that MEL activities are incorporated in work plans for partners.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, Statistics, Social Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Business Administration, or Development Studies with 5 years’ experience.
- Experience in M&E methods and approaches (quantitative, qualitative, participatory field research methods) including practices in the agriculture or nutrition sectors.
- Proficient in Microsoft office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), knowledge of statistical software (STATA or SPS5).
- Skilled in data management and analysis.
- Very good oral and written English communication skills; fluency in some local languages.
- Collaborative, self-motivated, and able to work well within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Very good interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Experience working with NGO community and local governments,
- Knowledge of pro-poor strategies; gender-sensitive approaches.
- Solid understanding of rural development, with a focus on participatory processes, joint management, and gender issues.
3. Driver
Duties
- Drive staff to and from the field.
- Ensure vehicle is keep in good mechanical condition and the vehicle is serviced periodically.
- Ensure all vehicle accessories are kept in good condition.
Minimum requirement and Experience
- O level certificate,
- Should possess a valid driving licence (C and E class)
- Additional training in defensive driving is an advantage.
- At least 5 years’ experience working with district local governments or NGOs.
