Chief Engineer – Marine

Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is hiring a Chief Engineer – Marine to oversee the technical and operational management of URC’s marine fleet, ensuring vessels are safe, efficient, and compliant with maritime standards. This role supports URC’s mandate to provide reliable marine transport services across Uganda’s water bodies, such as Lake Victoria, contributing to the corporation’s overall transport network.

Location: Kampala, Uganda (with frequent travel to marine sites)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Marine Operations Management
-
Supervise the operation, maintenance, and repair of URC’s marine vessels, including ferries and cargo ships.

Ensure vessels meet operational schedules and service delivery targets.

Technical Oversight
-
Develop and implement maintenance schedules to keep the fleet in optimal condition.

Oversee the design, retrofitting, and upgrading of marine equipment and infrastructure.

Safety and Compliance
-
Ensure all marine operations comply with Uganda’s maritime regulations, international conventions (e.g., SOLAS), and safety standards.

Conduct regular inspections and certifications of vessels to maintain seaworthiness.

Team Leadership

Manage and mentor marine engineering staff, including crew and technical teams, ensuring high performance and skill development.

Coordinate with external contractors and suppliers for repairs and spare parts procurement.

Budget and Resource Management

Prepare and manage the marine department’s budget, optimizing costs while maintaining quality.

Oversee procurement of marine equipment and materials in line with URC policies.

Emergency Response
-
Develop and implement contingency plans for marine emergencies, such as accidents or mechanical failures.

Lead response efforts during incidents to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.

Qualifications and Experience
-
Education:
-
A Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related field from a recognized institution.

A Master’s degree or professional certification (e.g., Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency) is an advantage.

Experience:
-
At least ten (10) years of experience in marine engineering, with five (5) years in a leadership role.

Proven experience managing marine fleets or maritime operations is essential.

Skills:

Deep knowledge of marine engineering systems, vessel maintenance, and maritime regulations.

Strong leadership, problem-solving, and project management skills.

Ability to work in challenging environments and under pressure.
