Communications Officer
Full-time
The Communications Officer will oversee the implementation of the communications strategy, mentor the Communications Assistant, and ensure the office is prepared to handle major public sector grant reporting. The role will focus on managing internal and external communications, earned and social media, and capacity building within the team.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Implementation
• Oversee the implementation of the existing communications strategy and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
• Develop and execute a detailed communications plan focusing on earned media, social media, and public relations.
Mentorship and capacity building
• Provide mentorship and guidance to the Communications Assistant, focusing on breaking down tasks, skill development, and professional growth.
• Conduct training sessions and workshops for the communications team to enhance their skills in reporting, media relations, and strategic communications.
Public Sector Grant Reporting
• Develop and implement systems and processes to manage major public sector grant reporting.
• Ensure compliance with reporting requirements and timelines for public sector grants.
• Collaborate with the Associate Vice President, Communications & Partnerships – JGI USA to gather necessary data and information for accurate and timely reporting.
Media Relations
• Build and maintain relationships with key media contacts to enhance the organization’s visibility.
• Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other media materials.
• Respond to media inquiries and coordinate interviews and press events.
Social Media Management
• Develop and implement a social media strategy to increase engagement and reach.
• Create and curate content for social media platforms, ensuring alignment with the organization’s messaging and branding.
• Monitor social media performance and adjust strategies as needed.
Internal Communications
• Ensure effective internal communication among staff to promote collaboration and information sharing.
• Develop and disseminate internal newsletters, updates, and announcements.
Monitoring and Evaluation
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communications activities and campaigns.
• Prepare regular reports on communications metrics and outcomes

Experience:
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in communications management, preferably within the nonprofit or conservation sector.
Educational Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred
Additional Knowledge and Skills:
• Proven track record of successfully implementing communications strategies and managing media relations.
• Experience with public sector grant reporting and compliance.
• Strong mentoring and capacity-building skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in social media management and digital communications tools
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong organizational and project management skills.
