Communications Officer

The Uganda Rugby Union seeks to recruit competent Ugandans for the position of a Communications Officer.

Job Title: Communications Officer

Job Purpose

The primary role of the Communications Officer is to nurture a strong media industry network, increase awareness and develop an enviable corporate image for URU by developing and executing effective communication and media relations programs and 360-degree communications and content plan.

Main Duties and Responsibilities.

  • Develop a marketing communications plan including strategy, goals, budget and tactics.
  • Develop media relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast, and online media.
  • Coordinate all public relations activities.
  • Direct social media team to engage audience across traditional and new media.
  • Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts within the broader Rugby fraternity.
  • Keep an eye on the latest social media trends
  • Develop and lead execution of a content plan across the various social media channels.
  •  Manage media inquiries and interview requests.
  • Strengthen relationships with all media personell
  • Create content for press releases, byline articles and keynote presentations
  • Monitor, analyse and communicate PR results on a quarterly basis
  • Evaluate opportunities for partnerships, sponsorships and advertising on an ongoing basis
  • Analyse campaign data and web traffic metrics
  • Build relationships with thought leaders to raise industry awareness

Personal specification.

Academic

Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Advertising or a related discipline.

Additional qualifications (Desirable): Postgraduate/certificate in communication related field

Experience

Essential

• A minimum of 1 year in a busy Public Relations and Communication environment.

Desirable

• 2 years or more hands on experience in a paid or voluntary capacity

Skills & Competences

Essential

  • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and can delegate effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong planning ability with excellent organizational skills
  • Ability and willingness to work outside of normal hours including evening and weekends.
  • Ability to manage a group of participants effectively.
  • Proven working experience in public relations required.
  • Proven track record designing and executing successful public relations campaigns at both a local and national level.
  • Strong relationships with both local and national federations,
  • Government and industry media outlets.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Solid experience with social media including blogs, Facebook, X platform, etc.
  • Event planning experience
