Engineer – Core Network Planning

Full-time

The main purpose of the Engineer – Core Network Planning is to provide system performance monitoring for MTN’s Circuit Switched Core Systems.

Reports to: Senior Consultant – Core Network Planning

 

Main Job Functions:

  • Setup, collect and analyze network statistics (such as processor load, call/transcoder/route/C7/HSL congestion, erlang utilization, MHT, BHCA, route availability,etc.) for core network switch equipment (such as MSC, BSC, MGW, MSC-S/SVC, CGSN, HLR, HSS, STP, IMS) as may be needed.
  • Review weekly, monthly and annual Core Network Node performance reports that capture the gist of the statistics mentioned in (1), above for Planning purposes.
  • Monitor Core Network traffic and recommend CS Core capacity adjustments to meet traffic requirements through (i) raising work orders to the Operations Department (ii) Network Status Reports
  • Forecast Core Network capacity requirements to meet growing network traffic demands and subscriber projections as per the MTN business plan.
  • Ensure timely development of Project specifications for all new Core Network Platforms and services for submission to the Capital Projects Department for Implementation.
  • Monitor Core Network Nodes Licenses so that timely license upgrades may be carried out without exceeding capacity limitations.
  • Participate in/Lead design for all new Core Network Platforms and Services.
  • Act as the technical Lead for Core Network Planning projects assigned
  • Update and Keep a record of all hardware and software versions for all Core Network equipment.
  • Carry out research on new CS Core platforms and software releases that can be used to improve services on the MTN Network.
  • Recommend appropriate CS Core Network resilience and redundancy plans.
  • Participate, in conjunction with the Capital Projects Department, in hand over of all completed Core Network developments to Network operations.
  • Perform any other duties, as may be required from time to time.

Education 

  • BSc Electrical Engineering / BSc Telecommunications Engineering/Electronics Engineering
  • Masters or Post Graduate diploma is an added advantage

Work Experience 

  • One year hands-on experience in Telecommunications CS core systems planning and monitoring (including Mobile switches – HLR, MSC, HSS Media Gateways, IMS, SVC etc.)
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office packages- Word, Excel, Power Point, Visio, Projects
