Finance Intern
Internship
Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET) is searching for a career driven youth (1 Position) with compete academic qualifications in Accounting and Finance. The Finance Intern will undertake an internship with the Finance Department of Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET), a dynamic department supporting the financial management of various advocacy and development programs. Their role will contribute to the financial operations of UWONET, offering essential support to the finance team and gaining valuable practical experience across finance and accounting processes in a busy NGO environment.
Objective
The primary objective of this internship is to provide the intern with hands-on experience in financial management within a nonprofit organization. The internship programme will allow the Intern to deepen their understanding of financial procedures, reporting, and compliance, while also contributing to the smooth financial operations of UWONET. They will gain exposure to budgeting, budget monitoring, grant management, statutory compliance, and internal controls.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: The Intern tasks and responsibilities will span across various key areas of financial management, including but not limited to:
Financial Record Keeping
- Assist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records.
- Support the finance team in maintaining the integrity of financial data by organizing and archiving financial documents properly.
Budget Monitoring
- Provide support in monitoring project budgets to ensure expenditures align with approved budgets and project deliverables.
- Assist in the preparation of project and departmental budgets as required.
- Help in the development of budget variance reports and analysing discrepancies between budgeted and actual expenditures.
Account Reconciliations
- Support the preparation of monthly reconciliations for key financial accounts such as bank accounts, accounts payable, and receivables.
- Assist in identifying and investigating discrepancies, reporting findings to the Finance Manager or senior finance staff.
Grant and Donor Reporting
- Assist in preparing financial reports for grants and donor-funded projects, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in line with donor expectations and reporting deadlines.
- Support the finance team in organizing financial documents for donor audits, evaluations, and financial reviews.
Accounts Payable and Receivable
- Assist with the processing of payments to vendors, contractors, and staff reimbursements, ensuring adherence to financial policies.
- Monitor outstanding receivables from staff, partners, and donors, and follow up to ensure timely collection.
- Help in verifying the accuracy of invoices and payment requests to avoid errors.
Statutory Compliance
- Provide assistance in the preparation and submission of statutory obligations such as the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Local Service Tax (LST), and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax submissions.
- Collaborate with the finance team in preparing reports for statutory regulatory bodies, including the Financial Intelligence Authority, NGO Board, and Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
Internal Controls and Audits
- Participate in the review and strengthening of financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with UWONET’ s internal controls and regulatory requirements.
- Support the finance team in gathering and organizing documentation for internal and external audits, ensuring timely submission of audit requirements.
- Contribute to ensuring the organization’s compliance with applicable laws, donor requirements, and internal audit standards.
Reporting Line: The Intern will report directly to the Finance Manager and work closely with other finance officers and team members to achieve departmental goals. Periodic supervision and mentorship will be provided to support career growth and learning.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, The Intern will have acquired:
- Practical experience in finance and accounting within a busy NGO setting, specifically in the context of gender advocacy and development work
- Knowledge of financial compliance and reporting requirements for donors, regulatory bodies, and statutory entities.
- Enhanced skills in financial data analysis, budgeting, and grant management.
- Proficiency in using financial systems and tools commonly used in the non-profit sector.

Evaluation and Feedback
- The Intern’s performance will be evaluated on a quarterly basis through an appraisal system. Key performance indicators will include:
- Accuracy and timeliness of financial documentation and reports.
- Ability to meet deadlines and complete tasks in an efficient manner.
- Willingness to learn, adapt to challenges, and contribute positively to the team.
- Regular feedback sessions will be conducted by the Finance Manager to ensure continual growth, provide mentorship, and identify areas for improvement.
Confidentiality
The Intern is required to maintain the highest level of confidentiality regarding all financial and organizational information encountered during his internship. Unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information will not be tolerated.
Human Resources Policies: The Intern will follow UWONET’ s Human Resources Policy and adhere to the organization’s policies on ethical behaviour, work conduct, and integrity.
Work Hours: The Intern will be expected to work full-time, 40 hours per week, adhering to UWONET’ s office schedule.
