Refactory Limited is an initiative that addresses the shortage of skilled software developers in Uganda and youth unemployment. Founded by Clarke International University (CIU), Laboremus Uganda Ltd, Fontes Foundation, and Youth With A Mission UK, Refactory aims to equip young people with essential skills for employment in the tech industry.

Position Overview:
The Gender & Inclusion Specialist will lead efforts to promote gender equality and foster an inclusive environment within Refactory Limited’s programming and operations. This role involves developing and implementing strategies for gender mainstreaming, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to support underrepresented youth groups, including women, refugees, and persons with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Gender Mainstreaming

  • Develop and implement strategies to integrate gender perspectives into academic programs, policies, and practices.
  • Conduct gender assessments to identify gaps and opportunities for advancing gender equality within the institution.
  • Provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students on integrating gender-sensitive approaches into teaching, research, and institutional activities.

2. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

  • Lead initiatives to promote DEI, including the recruitment, retention, and advancement of underrepresented groups such as refugees and persons with disabilities.
  • Develop and implement training programs on DEI topics for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to create inclusive policies, procedures, and practices that address the needs of diverse populations.

3. Research and Advocacy

  • Conduct research on gender and diversity issues in higher education to identify best practices and innovative approaches.
  • Advocate for institutional changes and policy reforms to advance gender equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Represent the institution at external forums, conferences, and networks focused on gender and inclusion in academia.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Establish indicators and benchmarks to monitor progress on gender and inclusion initiatives.
  • Collect and analyze data on gender and diversity outcomes to assess the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Prepare regular reports and presentations for senior management and stakeholders on key findings and recommendations.

5. Capacity Building

  • Provide training and capacity-building support to institutional stakeholders on gender-sensitive and inclusive practices.
  • Promote a culture of awareness, empathy, and respect for diversity through education and engagement activities.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Education, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience working on gender and inclusion issues in academic or development settings.
  • In-depth understanding of gender mainstreaming principles, intersectionality, and social justice frameworks.
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing gender and inclusion initiatives, including training programs and policy advocacy.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to conduct research, data analysis, and evaluation of gender-related programs.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, students, administrators, and community partners.
  • Familiarity with relevant laws, policies, and frameworks related to gender equality and diversity in education.

Reporting Structure:
The Gender & Inclusion Specialist will report to the Head of Strategy & Analytics and work closely with the Programs Team.
