New Vision Printing and Publishing Company Ltd is hiring a dynamic and self motivated individual to fill the position of Legal Officer-Litigation to support the Company’s legal function through defending and instituting legal suits against the Company, overseeing criminal and civil prosecution, and handling any legal matters on behalf of the Company,
Position: Legal Officer, Litigation
Reports to: Manager, Legal and Board Relations
Duty Station: Head Office
Key Result Areas:
- Represent the company in court in all legal matters including drafting and reviewing court pleadings, preparing witnesses and other obligations that may arise from time to time in relation to litigation in order to manage litigation risks and defend the business through well prepared representation.
- Supervise the conduct of debt collection matters by receiving and analyzing reports of external debt collectors and providing reports to the Manager Legal & Board
- Relations on the same.
- Receive and investigate notices of intention to sue, evaluate evidence available and advise on most appropriate action in order to minimize the company’s exposure.
- Follow up on matters to ensure timely response to notices of intention to sue.
- Follow up on prosecution of criminal cases through tracking and preparation of witnesses and following up with police and DPP on reported cases.
- Maintain a criminal-cases log to ensure timely follow up on the matters and to guide on decision making.
- Train staff on legal issues in order to create awareness and appreciation of the law as well as manage legal risk through awareness.
- Advise on adverts or stories to run and address any foreseen legal issues to ensure the company is protected.
- Carry out legal research in order to provide well-reasoned opinions and advice that promotes business by minimizing legal suit risk and loss.
- Prepare monthly reports on all matters and provide any developments/trends in the laws governing the company.
- Other duties as may be assigned by the Manager Legal and Board relations
Education and Professional Qualifications:
- Bachelors’ Degree in Law.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
- Enrolled and Practicing Advocate of the Courts of Judicature in Uganda.
- A certificate in Trial Advocacy.
Working Experience:
• At least 2 years’ post enrollment work experience in the in-house legal department of commercial organization of the size of New Vision or a reputable law firm.
