Production Mentor/Trainer

BBC Media Action is hiring a Production Mentor/Trainer to help partner media organisations, and local journalists to develop quality programmes and packages in their daily output that can inform, empower and connect local communities with a focus on governance. He/she will be responsible for the capacity building of media partners, using the insights from research and a detailed understanding of the media ecosystem. The Production Mentor/Trainer will also be responsible for producing short form media content in collaboration with freelancers.
BBC Media Action is implementing a media development project in Uganda and is seeking an experienced Producer Mentor/Trainer to lead the capacity building and mentoring of our media partners as well as oversee the production of some short form social media/radio content.
Main duties
The Production Mentor/Trainer will work with partner stations producers to develop their creative skills and help them to produce high-quality radio content that engages and informs listeners. He/She will also be responsible for delivering training and mentoring on content production including research and all aspects of story production.
• Provide regular on-job mentoring to the selected local partner stations to ensure they can produce high-quality content as per the needs of the audiences.
• Co-design and produce creative content radio/social media (with freelancers if necessary) that meets the project’s communications objectives.
• Use the insights from research to support media partners and develop the project activities.
• Assist media partners in producing creative content in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key governance issues.
• Carry out needs/capacity assessments of partner stations including an assessment of the station’s equipment and the journalists’ capabilities/skills.
• Provide training, advice, support, ideas, and help through a mixture of email and phone contact, in person and online training to partner stations and local journalists.
• Manage relationships with the local media partners.
• Monitor the training programme’s effectiveness and successes regularly, and report regularly on activities and impact.
• Maintain a keen awareness of developments in the media ecosystem in Uganda particularly with regard to mis/dis information.
• Produce mentoring reports using the agreed template and timeline.
• Support the design of training workshops and managing logistics and arrangements for training and mentoring sessions.
• Advise local media partners and local journalists to help them maintain strong production and editorial values.
• Perform other duties as requested by the manager and liaise with other teams as required.
Job Requirements:
• An impressive track-record in an editorial role as an editor, producer or journalist.
• At least 3 years of media training experience and at least 5 years of experience in broadcast/online journalism.
• Excellent understanding of the Uganda media ecosystem
• A keen interest in media research and countering mis/dis information.
• Proven experience of and enthusiasm for training and mentoring.
• Demonstrable creative ability, with a proven track-record in coming up with innovative ideas for training and content creation.
• Familiarity with a wide range training methods (mentoring, coaching, on-the-job, in classroom training, e-learning, workshops, simulations etc.)
• Experience of making multi-media programming on a range of topics.
• Ability to assess safety and security issues involved in media production and reporting.
• Ability to travel around Uganda for training and mentoring purposes.
• Strong planning and organizing skills, including some understanding of project management.
