Protection Manager

Full-time

Alight Uganda is hiring a Protection Manager to lead the implementation of Alight’s protection programming. Responsibilities include supervising the Protection team, overseeing protection activities, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with program requirements. This role involves close collaboration with UNHCR, protection actors in refugee settlements, and settlement leadership structures.

The Protection Manager will work with implementing partners to uphold principles of effective and high-quality interventions across various sub-sectors, including Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Child Protection, Legal Assistance, Community Services, and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS). The position demands technical support and supervision to ensure program design and implementation adhere to international and national standards, promote human rights, and create a positive community impact.

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports directly to the Team Leader.
  • Receives technical supervision from the Protection Lead.
Key Duties & Responsibilities

Staff Supervision & Development

  • Mentor and build the capacity of protection staff in GBV, child protection, community services, and legal assistance, focusing on technical knowledge, project cycle management, budgeting, team management, coordination, and reporting.
  • Provide technical supervision and mentoring for field protection teams, enabling staff to assume management responsibilities.
  • Maintain professional relations with team members, fostering team spirit and enabling staff to excel in their roles through clear expectations and regular performance feedback.
  • Promote staff care and well-being, and manage leave requests in coordination with Field Coordinators to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Collaborate with the Protection Technical Lead and Senior Protection Technical Coordinators to prepare technical documents.

Grant Planning & Project Implementation

  • Lead the overall implementation of the Protection program in designated settlements, ensuring goals and objectives are met, and projects are appropriately monitored and evaluated.
  • Submit timely project reports as per schedules (monthly, quarterly, annually), ensuring work plans align with program objectives.
  • Update grants documents (Indicator Tracking Sheet, Activity, and Budget Trackers) and share with the Program Manager.
  • Provide significant input into donor reports, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Monitor project budgets in consultation with the Finance Team and Sub-Sector Leads to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in strategic proposal development meetings and contribute lessons learned to update the overall protection strategy.

Technical Quality/Programme Management

  • Provide technical guidance to sub-sector teams on protection activities.
  • Ensure safe and confidential data collection practices in line with international standards.
  • Maintain effective referral pathways for protection cases, updating and maintaining SOPs for referrals.
  • Develop SOPs for GBV, Child Protection, legal assistance, and protection monitoring.
  • Organize and deliver high-quality protection training for Alight staff and partners.
  • Promote a scalable community-based protection approach that fosters self-protection capacities in host and refugee settlements.

Reporting and Advocacy

  • Analyze protection data and prepare succinct, analytical inputs for reports shared with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advise on protection trends to inform country-wide strategies and plans.

Coordination & Representation

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with UNHCR and other external stakeholders, representing Alight’s interests and resolving conflicts.
  • Actively participate in Site-Level Protection Cluster’s Working Groups and share updates with the Protection Lead at the national level.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Community Psychology, Education, Development Studies, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year in humanitarian environments or similar settings, with experience in GBV/Child Protection roles. Refugee-focused work is an added advantage.
  • Skills: Management skills, report writing, strong computer skills, and ability to work independently.
  • Languages: Candidates from the South-Western region with proficiency in Swahili and local languages are preferred.
  • Other: Motorbike riding experience and permit are preferable.
