Security Assistant

Full-time

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, and with the direct supervision from the National Security Officer in the Staff Security Unit, the Security assistant will be performing the following mission safety/security support functions duties below;

Responsibilities

  1. Support the implementation of country specific safety and security plans, by remaining conversant with various procedures and policies of UN DSS and the IOM Security management System and advising the National Security Officer on safety and security issues in the assigned fields of responsibility.
  2. Update all regional contact lists including Call Sign lists and ensure contribute to overall operability of  communications systems through monitoring regional communications operability.
  3. Support the National Security Officer in liaising with UNDSS and other local security stakeholders at the appropriate level.
  4. Contribute to maintaining an orderly filing system for all security files.
  5. Support the National Security Officer in maintaining an updated level of  communication documentation and files.
  6. Keep abreast and vigilant of the local and regional security situation and report significant events/incidents in a timely manner to the National Security Officer using prescribed reporting forms and modalities.
  7. Undergo radio procedure training and maintain a sufficient level in radio procedure skills to support the National Security Officer in radio procedure training for national and international staff.
  8. Support investigations and report security breaches/incidents within the unit’s mandate to the National Security Officer, while ensuring strict confidentiality.
  9. Support the National Security Officer in conducting physical security survey of offices, vehicles, and staff residences to ensure compliance to Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS) and Residential Security Measures (RSM).
  10. Support the National Security Officer in following up staff member’s compliance with existing safety and security protocols including completion of the mandatory Security training and obtaining security clearances as required.
  11. Assist to organize and deliver training courses on security awareness and preparedness and provide security orientation to visitors and newly assigned staff.
  12. Respond to security queries and suggest appropriate course of action in coordination with the National Security Officer.
  13. Support the National Security Officer in conducting fire drills and other emergency/ evacuation planning exercises.
  14. In the absence of the National Security Officer, conduct tasks of the National and Security Officer as assigned.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic institution in the field of Security Management,
    Social Sciences, International Studies, Communications with two (2) years of relevant professional
    experience, OR
  • High School diploma with four (4) years of relevant professional experience.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience
  • Previous experience in the military, law enforcement, Disaster (Risk) Management, International
    Relations, Social Science or Business Administration or a related field experience in security
    management, law enforcement is an advantage.
  • Previous experience in UN Missions or Emergency Missions
  • Previous experience in dealing with law enforcement agencies an advantage
  • Proven ability to collaborate with senior military/ Police and government counterparts
Languages
  • For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).
    Desirable
  • Fluency in Kiswahili
