Senior Reinsurance Officer

The Senior Reinsurance Officer will support the Manager Reinsurance by organizing and closely following up on the provision of reinsurance services by SWICO, in line with established plans, policies, and standards.

KEY RESULT AREAS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Result Area 1: Planning and Organizing for Reinsurance Services
- Contribute to the development of strategies, work plans, and budgets for reinsurance services.
- Ensure the availability of necessary facilities and resources for reinsurance operations.
- Set performance targets for Reinsurance Officers and conduct periodic appraisals against these targets.
Result Area 2: Ensuring Effective Provision of Reinsurance Services
- Assist in preparing reinsurance programs.
- Arrange facultative insurance for business exceeding the company’s capacity.
- Prepare quarterly reconciliation statements for insurers, reinsurers, and brokers, and submit them to IRA.
- Supervise the preparation of reinsurance credit/debit notes, cession slips, loss advice, and statistical returns.
- Monitor recoveries from reinsurers for claims and follow up on remittances.
- Prepare and manage reports for business production, profit commission statements, and quarterly Bordereaux for surplus treaties.
- Handle reinsurance certificates and risk profiles for reinsurers.
Result Area 3: Leadership
- Assign and supervise work for Reinsurance Officers.
- Evaluate staff performance and provide guidance and training as needed.
- Identify capacity development needs and foster teamwork and motivation among staff.
- Participate in the coaching and on-the-job training of new staff.
Result Area 4: Institutional Management and Development
- Address internal and external queries and represent the company in meetings as needed.
- Maintain up-to-date data on reinsurance programs and provide actionable advice to the Manager Reinsurance.
- Suggest improvements in reinsurance services and participate in departmental and management meetings.
- Assist in the preparation of periodic reports for submission to regulators and deputize for the Manager Reinsurance when required.
PERSON SPECIFICATION: Assistant Manager Reinsurance
Minimum Academic and/or Professional Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, Social Sciences, or Arts.
Additional Training/Qualifications:
- Professional insurance qualification (e.g. CII).
Minimum Experience and Exposure:
- At least 5 years of progressive work experience in underwriting, claims, or reinsurance, with 3 years at a supervisory level.
Key Knowledge Required:
- In-depth knowledge of the insurance industry and insurance accounting.
Key Skills Required:
- Negotiation, computer proficiency, communication, and report writing skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, relationship management, and people skills.
Other Qualities/Attributes:
- Teamwork, time management, creativity, and the ability to work under minimum supervision.
- High integrity, accuracy, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality and thoroughness.
