WWF Uganda is hiring a Project Manager – FRECAR (Forest Restoration for Enhanced Carbon absorption in Albertine Rift). to oversee programs, financial, and human resources to halt forest degradation, regenerate forests, and improve the climate resilience and livelihoods of adjacent communities in the Kagombe-Bugoma Landscape.

Job Summary

Project Outcomes:

  1. Effective coordination of subnational and national stakeholders around carbon projects.
  2. Improved management of forests in Central Forest Reserves (CFRs).
  3. Enhanced community attitudes toward conservation and improved wellbeing.
  4. Revegetation of privately owned natural forests in micro-catchments.
  5. Communities engaged in profitable and sustainable livelihood activities.
Main Duties:

  • Engage with national and sub-national structures on carbon emissions programs/REDD+ initiatives.
  • Collaborate with WWF Uganda’s Energy and Climate Program to develop and promote mechanisms for registering and monitoring projects contributing to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) fulfillment.
  • Support NFA in developing and implementing management plans for Bugoma, Kagombe, Kitechura, and associated forest reserves.
  • Assist NFA in demarcating Bugoma, Kagombe, and Kitechura with pillars and belts of indigenous tree species.
  • Support afforestation, reforestation, and regeneration initiatives in degraded compartments of Kagombe and Bugoma CFRs.
  • Promote CCB and VCS carbon standards among WWF staff and implementing stakeholders.
  • Support data collection to update carbon models, working with NFA and external carbon consultants.
  • Strengthen collaborative forest management groups to conserve forests and adopt economically viable nature-based enterprises.
  • Support establishment of commercial plantations in communities adjacent to Bugoma and Kagombe to reduce pressure on forest reserves.
  • Collaborate with Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU) to promote Population Health and Environment approaches, enhancing climate resilience and health for humans and nature.
  • Strengthen management of privately owned natural forests.
  • Develop business cases for nature-based enterprises (including plantations) and link them to private sector value chains.
  • Engage youth and women in climate adaptation interventions to improve resilience, incomes, and food security.
  • Build technical, institutional, and financial capacity of partners (NFA, Districts, Civil Society Organizations) for sustainable carbon accounting systems.
  • Oversee project budget, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of outputs with value for money.
  • Mainstream WWF’s pro-people conservation approaches (SD4C/ESSF policies) on livelihoods, human rights, gender, and conflict resolution.
  • Enhance program visibility through high-quality documentation, documentaries, branding, and participation in partner events.
  • Perform additional duties as requested by WWF supervisors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Environmental Studies, Wildlife Management, or a related discipline.
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field is preferred.

Required Experience:

  • 5+ years in forestry management, natural resource management, or conservation management.
  • Experience in forest carbon projects and CCB/VCS standards is an advantage.
  • Expertise in CSO governance, mentoring, group management, and/or training.
  • Proven track record in delivering community-based natural resource management projects.
  • Demonstrable experience engaging with government, private sector, and civil society at all levels.
  • Experience with international organizations and working with local governments and communities.
  • Familiarity with National Forestry Authority, Ministry of Trade, FSSD, National Environment Management Authority, Ministry of Water and Environment, and Department for Climate Change is desired.
  • Knowledge of Uganda’s NDC process is an advantage.
  • Fluency in English; conversational ability in one or more local languages is preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Strong project management skills, including planning, financial management, reporting, and evaluation for projects above USD 2 million.
  • Proficient in financial management and Excel.
  • Strong report writing skills.
  • Ability to think laterally and creatively.
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills (written and verbal) for presentation, persuasion, influence, and negotiation.
  • Ability to represent WWF confidently and credibly.
  • Team player with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Strong prioritization and time management skills.
