The role of the Underwriter is to carry out routine insurance policy underwriting tasks.
Department: Underwriting
Reports to: Senior Underwriting Officer
Directly Supervises: None
KEY RESULT AREAS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Result Area 1: Preparation of Policies
- Assist clients/proposers in filling out proposal forms.
- Study, examine, and analyze proposal forms and renewal instructions.
- Inspect the insurance subject matter when necessary or as instructed by superiors.
- Participate in risk assessments before policy underwriting.
- Document assessed risks and advise the Supervisor.
- Prepare policy files.
- Calculate premiums as instructed by the Supervisor.
- Assist in negotiating and creating underwriting agreements when delegated.
- Issue quotations to marketers as instructed by the Supervisor.
Result Area 2: Administration of Policies
- Dispatch issued underwriting documents to the appropriate destinations.
- Receive premiums from clients and ensure receipts from Accounts Department.
- Monitor risks and advise the Supervisor.
- Prepare renewal notices as instructed.
- Follow up on renewal notices when delegated.
- Address branch office queries as instructed.
Result Area 3: Data and Records Management
- Properly file clients’ documents.
- Review files for clients whose policies have not yet been renewed.
- Maintain departmental files, ensuring safe custody in the company registry after transactions.
- Help maintain an updated register of daily work assignments in the department.
Result Area 4: Business Development
- Participate in product development.
- Assist in marketing company products.
- Advise clients on suitable policy packages and other insurance-related matters.
- Accompany insurance agents on sales calls when necessary.
PERSON SPECIFICATION: Underwriter Motor / Marine
Minimum Academic/Professional Qualifications
- University Degree in Business Administration, Social Sciences, or Arts.
Additional Training/Qualifications
- Professional qualification in insurance, such as Certificate CII or its equivalent.
Minimum Experience and Exposure
- At least 1 year of experience in Underwriting.
Key Knowledge Required
- In-depth knowledge of the insurance industry.
- Understanding of insurance principles, theory, and practice.
Key Skills Necessary
- Ability to prepare insurance policies.
- Negotiation skills.
- Strong computer, communication, listening, and analytical skills.
- Interpersonal skills and customer care expertise.
