Old Mutual is hiring a Business Development Officer – Direct Business with the following major outputs;
Key Outputs
The following key outputs are required from this role:
- Develop and roll out new distribution channels in consultation with the Strategy and Innovation Manager, including M-channels, E-channels, distribution partnerships, retail centers, and outlets.
- Provide advice on potential products and services to respond to business opportunities in a timely manner.
- Prepare tenders and bids for new and renewal General Insurance (GI) business, including direct, agency, broking, and medical business.
- Maintain a tenders/bids pipeline for new and renewal business, ensuring follow-up for closure.
- Coordinate required information and response material from all parties, ensuring completeness of submissions.
- Manage timely provision of graphic designs and visual presentations (hard copy and digital) within set deadlines.
- Manage feedback from purchasers on unsuccessful tenders to improve future submissions.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and correspond with purchasing authorities.
- Ensure return and cancellation of expired bid securities.
- Respond to quotation requests promptly.
- Develop prospects into new GI business to promote growth.
- Establish and cultivate relationships with intermediaries, clients, and Old Mutual Insurance business partners.
- Assist the Agency Services Manager in executing GI business development strategic initiatives.
- Update daily reporting formats with activities undertaken or as advised by the supervisor.
- Represent Old Mutual Insurance in business development meetings with prospective clients.
- Address customer service issues in GI business development.
- Maintain and report on a pipeline for new and renewal GI business.
- Grow the direct book sustainably with cost-effective business, ensuring growth and a good loss ratio.
Deliverables (Work Elements)The following detailed outputs are required:
- Identify collaborations and partnerships with stakeholders (e.g., distributors, technical partners, aggregators) to enhance insurance services.
- Set up systems to track and monitor work in progress and business production.
- Conduct joint fieldwork with Branch Managers and business development staff to support business acquisition.
- Monitor alternative business channel performance, address failures, and implement strategies to capitalize on opportunities.
- Prepare bid documents per tender requirements for timely submission and respond to clarification requests.
- Ensure bid management aligns with organizational requirements.
- Source tenders and RFQs relevant to company solutions and products.
- Coordinate the development and delivery of tender/proposal documents within deadlines.
- Manage administrative functions related to the RFQ process.
- Maintain an effective records management system for all current company documentation required in tenders.
- Maintain a status report of generic proposals, working with the Sales Manager to ensure review, revision, and approval.
- Coordinate tender reviews and deadlines based on customer frameworks.
- Ensure adherence to Compliance, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and Sanctions policies, including customer due diligence, Know-Your-Customer (KYC) standards, ongoing/enhanced due diligence, and data quality maintenance. Identify and escalate potential AML, Sanctions, or Compliance breaches to the Risk and Compliance Office.
- Perform any other duties assigned.
- Provide specialist knowledge and execute account development strategies and sales plans to achieve medium-sized sales targets.

- Data Collection and Analysis: Collate and analyze data using preset tools, methods, and formats, working independently.
- Information and Business Advice: Resolve queries from internal/external customers or suppliers on complex processes and policies, referring issues to others when necessary.
- Document Preparation: Prepare moderately complex documents using standard office software and gather/summarize data for reports.
- Insights and Reporting: Extract and combine data to generate standard reports.
- Customer Relationship Management / Account Management: Make calls (phone or in-person) to allocated customers to maintain relationships and resolve queries/complaints.
- Financial Advice: Provide comprehensive financial planning and advice for complex client situations.
- Sales: Deliver routine sales support services.
- Operational Compliance: Develop knowledge of organizational policies, regulatory codes, and codes of conduct, obtaining authorization for exceptions.
- Personal Capability Building: Participate in assessment, development planning, formal/informal training, and coaching. Stay updated on technology, regulations, and industry best practices through ongoing education, conferences, and specialist media.
