Makerere University College of Health Sciences School of Public Health (MakSPH) is hiring an Intervention Facilitator (2) with the following responsibilities;
Background
Makerere University College of Health Sciences, School of Public Health (MakSPH)in part nership with San Diego State University will conduct an NIH-funded five-year study titled “Reducing hazardous alcohol use and optimizing treatment as prevention among men living with HIV in risk environments” (Kisoboka II). The purpose of this study is to learn about the health of men living with HIV in the fishing communities. The study will be conducted in health facilities that serve the fishing communities in Nakasongola, Buikwe, Mukono and Buvuma Districts. The study will have four different arms evaluating four interventions. The project will be implemented in collaboration with Makerere University Walter Reed Program. The study team seeks to recruit responsible, qualified, and competent individuals who can work with minimum supervision to join its team as Intervention Facilitators.
Responsibilities
- Deliver the intervention sessions
- Ensure high fidelity to the intervention protocol
- Attend daily debrief meetings with the Field Supervisor to review each day’s activities and plan for the next day
- Complete weekly performance review reports and submit them to the Field Supervisor
- Attend physical or zoom meetings to discuss issues pertaining to the delivery of the interventions, as may be scheduled from time to time
- Send out participant reminders to the participants and document progress
- Implement intervention components specific to the study arm assigned to
- Monitor and report the emergence of any potential adverse events
- Ensure high retention of participants in the intervention
- Strictly follow the standard operating procedures and adhere to the highest confidentiality and research ethics principles
- Other duties relevant to the position as may be assigned by the Field Supervisor from time to time.
Qualifications and Desirable Qualities
- A university degree in education, health education, health promotion, public health, adult and continuing education, or social work. Candidates without a university degree but who have demonstrable skills and hands-on experience in facilitating health interventions in general or HIV, alcohol or substance use interventions in particular, may be considered.
- At least 2 years’ experience working in a health research environment or research intervention or with health program implementing partners in a fishing community setting
- Experience and skills in motivating participants to complete multi-session training interventions
- Training in general counseling skills and/or HIV/AIDS counseling in particular
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work well in a team
- Excellent attention to detail and quality control
- Fluency in Luganda and English
- Prior experience facilitating adult group sessions in a research setting in the capacity of a health educator, intervention facilitator, or behavior change communication expert is an added advantage
- Prior experience or training in motivational interviewing techniques is an added advantage
